In this blog I’ll present some points related to the use of degrees of certainty in evaluation. I think that degrees of certainty have multiple purposes in evaluation, from minimizing the chance of receiving a high score in guessing to getting involved in a regulating metacognition (as defined by Noël, 1991, La métacognition, Bruxelles, De Boeck).

A regulating metacognition roughly means to give a judgment about one’s own knowledge, to analyze the results and to take, or not, decision to regulate. It is only by doing all three in a row that one gets into a regulating metacognition. Repeating this cycle for every evaluation one should improve both quality of knowledge and quality of own judgment regarding that knowledge. In this blog I will expose some of my reflection using degrees of certainty with a tariff scale, trying to create or adjust different reckoner and putting in a place a system to promote regulating metacognition that exclude the use of a tariff to collect honest degree of certainty.

Possible uses of degrees of certainty or confidence marking

Let’s examine if we understand each other by sharing the same vocabulary
